Divina Pastora souls in Lara (Barquisimeto, Venezuela)

the second largest in the world procession
Divina Pastora is the "patrona" or the Image of the Virgin Mary in the city of Barquisimeto, Lara State, Venezuela. Her carrosa or "statue" is typically carried on the main steets of Barquisimeto on a procession each January 14 from the city of Santa Rosa in the outskirts of Barquisimeto until it reaches the cathedral of Barquisimeto which is about 5 mils away. This procession occurs due to the devotion the people of Barquisimeto have towards it as gratitude towards saving the city from a cholera outbreak that occurred in the city in the 19th century.

the santa rosa procession to the cathedral in Barquisimeto
The beginning of the veneration of the Divina Pastora dates back to 1736, date on which the parish priest of Santa Rosa asked a famous sculptor who made a statue of the Immaculate Conception. However, by a strange mistake, instead of the Immaculate, arrived in town the image of the Divina Pastora. Immediately, the pastor wanted to return, but however hard they tried, they could not lift the drawer where she had placed the image. From this point the population played this rare event as a sign that the Divine Shepherdess wanted to stay between them. Later, during the events of the 1812 earthquake, the temple where they worship the Divine Shepherdess was destroyed, but her image was miraculously intact, a fact that reinforced the belief of the faithful of Santa Rosa that the Virgin wanted to stay forever among them to protect .

Finally, in mid nineteenth-century Venezuelan held an event that would contribute to the definitive consolidation of the Divina Pastora Lara state as patron. In 1855, Venezuela broke out in a terrible epidemic of cholera. Barquisimeto many families were decimated by the terrible evil, to which were completely useless medicines, cries and prayers. Desperate and as a last resort, the villagers decided to take in procession through the streets of Barquisimeto the image of the Divina Pastora to implore his mercy, especially, a priest named Macario Yepez, the pastor of the Church of Concepción, affected by the disease asked to Divina Pastora be the last to die of cholera, a request that was granted, and that from that day, stopped a cholera epidemic. That is why in memory of this fact, every January 14 moves in a massive procession and fervent, the Divina Pastora Barquisimeto from the church of Santa Rosa.

INTERNATIONAL

CARNIVAL

Carnival is a popular festival which takes place in countries of Christian tradition.

Carnival is an annual celebration, cheerful, which takes place during carnival, in the three days preceding Ash Wednesday and, therefore, at Lent.

The word comes from the Latin Carnem levare, 'removing the meat', referring to the prohibition against eating meat forty days of Lent during which they should be eaten no meat or animal fat. The term Shrove comes from the Latin "to meat tollendo dominica" (Sunday before removing the meat).

According to the religious calendar, the period of "Carnival" starts on January 6, Epiphany (the date marking the end of the Christmas period) and continues until Ash Wednesday.

The carnival has possibly originated in pagan festivals, such as the Apis bull and Isis in Egypt, the Greek Dionysian festivals and the Bacchanalia, Lupercalia and Saturnalia Roman and Celtic festivals of mistletoe. The ancient Romans conducted in mid February, the "Lupercalia" (festivals held in honor of the god Pan).
